Fill me in. Why the boycott?

Fill me in, why the boycott? Are they known to add dirty hipster trucker caps rather than hops to the mix?

Paula - 2007-06-26 17:45:01
That article I linked to 'splains the crux of it: BB supports the stadium.

I've never had a Brooklyn Brewery brew that didn't taste like over-sweetened run-off from around the taps... like the hops were mouldered or something. I've rarely had a microbrew that didn't taste like crap, nor have I EVER had a single micro brew or local beer that tasted anything like anything I ever had anywhere in any country in Europe (had some crap beers in Europe too. There, I've said it. I'm a beer agnostic. It's like the emperors new clothes--I see people going into these brew pubs and sampling half a dozen from shot glasses until the decide on some swill with 8 fancy names strung together. It's a sham.

That sounds so crabby... I actually do a fairly funny imitation of "beer-sample-face" for anybody interested. I hope I didn't offend anybody with above... but all this brewhaha to me is like watching someone order top shelf single malt and mix it with cola.

Dude, I totally knew you were gonna post that! I am like freaking myself out right now.

Me? Shoot! I've gotten predictable.

Wait--I can't tell if BP is commenting on my post, or on Greg's comment.

I'm not a beer, um, advocate, but I do like Brooklyn Lager and can taste the difference between , say, PBR and a microbrew, and prefer the latter. I don't think it's a case of people trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes, it's just a matter of what appeals to the ol' taste buds.
-------------------------------
Greg - 2007-06-27 06:25:35
Oh, there are definitely differences, but the differences aren't qualitative, at least to me. Years ago I moonlighted as the Schaefer taste-test guy, and I can't tell you how many times Schaefer won out over other beers, even amongst people who swore the other beers their favorites. There will always be preferences and that's fair... but there are a ton of mediocre swills out there masquerading as quality.

Bina - 2007-06-27 07:35:45
Moonlighted as a taste-test guy? How cool! Tell us what you had to do. Did you get paid for this or did they just figure all that beer was payment enough? Can I get a job like that taste-testing chocolate? I'm really excited and fired up now. For the next three seconds anyway.

Paula, I was referring to Greg's comment.

Mr Party is a homebrewer, and I think the differences between brews are qualitative...at least to me, heh. And of course, some microbrews and craft brews suck, but not in the same way that Schaefer sucks. Anyway, maybe one day Mr. Party will whip up another batch of his Left Nutbrown Ale, and you can come over a sample it, and show us your beerface.

Mr Party is a homebrewer

Nice! I either knew that and forgot, or just didn't know.

I had a roommate a long time ago who made his own beer, and most of the batches were really tasty.

haha... many moons ago, a friend and I spent an unemployed winter making beer in his garage. We made a pilsener that came out nicely, and a dark beer that tasted nice but acted like a laxative. VERY funny for about a week because so many people loved the way it tasted but were caught unawares... underwears? Schaefer does suck but dollar for dollar, it gets the short shrift--I saw firsthand that if people think it might cost a lot more, it all of a sudden tastes a lot better.

Greg - 2007-06-27 13:02:46
Bina, as a taste test dude, I had to go into bars and set up double blind taste tests--prizes, hot chicks in tight tee-shirts, games, free branded merchandise, etc. I did it for a liquor distributor for a while also.. mostly Jameson's Irish Whiskey.

Greg - 2007-06-27 13:06:32
BP.. don't mind me. I'm the world's biggest cynic. I would agree though that homebrew is generally better than the stuff masquerading as micro-brew etc. First bar I ever drank in sold only Schaefer lager on tap. They had glass lines running from the kegs, sold a ton of it, and it was always ice cold... to date my fondest memories of beer drinking.

Greg - 2007-06-27 14:59:26
We set up a still that winter also and I have to tell you... that process stinks. Pretty dangerous also we found out after the fact. I don't recommend it.

The old Schaefer tagline is one of the few advertising slogans that can bring a genuine tear to my eye: "The one beer to have when you're having more than one." When I was kid it stuck in my head, but I didn't get it. But I learned. Whoever wrote that deserves a medal.

Alan - 2007-06-27 17:17:16
To me, Schaefer is how cold beer on a hot day should taste, though it's not nearly as good if I'm not really thirsty. Sadly, it's become increasing difficult to find around here. I was looking for some a few weeks ago and couldn't it anywhere in Denver.
-------------------------------
Greg - 2007-06-28 15:04:00
I've mostly quit drinking beer because I had turned into a whale, but even prior to quitting, Schaefer was increasingly difficult to find. I did prefer it to any of the Anheuser Busch or Miller variations... I like it better than any of the overrated Sam Adams crap brews also. Brooklyn stuff is all waaaaay too sweet. Didn't like any of the faux micro-brews like Saranac being made in the old Matt's and Black Label breweries in Utica.... Yes.. Utica Club, friends.
