Paula... that is totally your funniest glob zinger in a long time, and there have been some doozies too. But hey, they're giving Turkey a shot, so I guess everybody has a chance.

I love the I hardly know ya/her/him joke template. I am laughing at my desk amid the stares of my colleagues.
It has been proposed that Croatia, too, can be improved by Pop-o-matic technology.
Am I the only one who's worried about Turkey? Clearly Europe's just not into her, and she's starting to act kinda desperate.

Mr. L. Here in the States, unless you happen to live amongst Armenians or Kurds, Turkey seems to have been given a big pass on grotesque historical facts. Are you in the States, btw? Some of the EU members seem to have a better grasp of history (Turkish history anyway because they sure as hell have rewritten their own in a few cases). People should be concerned about Turkey!

Heh. I was shooting for a joke (Substitute 'Tiffany' for 'Turkey' and 'Brad' for 'Europe') and shot wide of the mark. I can't see the EU ever admitting Turkey. And Turkey should just deal with that and work toward narrower bilateral agreements on trade & labor with them.

(I am in the U.S. btw. And I can't get out!)

I don't know why I thought you were European. In any event, the EU excluding Turkey for human rights reasons is kind of like getting thrown out of Guns N' Roses for taking too many drugs. Human rights... the U.S. Lacking. I've been stopped at the border too.

This Perkovic fella' certainly isn't the first rock star to incorporate Nazi/Fascist imagery as part of their particular dog-and-pony-show (how long have Laibach and Rammstein been at it, anyways?); but what gets me is the cavalier attitude of the Croatian gov't towards the whole thing; I mean, they don't have to be stuffed shirts about it, but they could maybe suggest to Marko that he tone it down a little -- sheesh!
-------------------------------
Greg - 2007-07-02 19:15:47
Grigorss... I've seen a lot of Nazi imagery over the years but somehow this Croatian and his fans seem somehow more insidious than Iggy Pop, or the dork from Interpol with the brownshirt uniform... or any of the swastika adorned punks.
-------------------------------
Greg - 2007-07-02 19:44:03
And Grigorss I have to agree the Croat Govt's response was really insincere and dishonest. At the time the photo was taken with Shimon Peres, both he and Peres shared a common interest in exterminating Muslims. Who is he really trying to kid?

grigorss - 2007-07-02 20:06:33
Greg -- Oh, I would agree; the indifferent response of the Croatian gov't would suggest that something more than "youthful exuberance" is at play here.
-------------------------------
Paula - 2007-07-03 09:33:23
I think Marko Perkovic's nonchalant use of Nazi imagery is far more insidious and disturbing than some idiotic punk or metal band's using it as an obvious attempt to be offensive. The banality of evil and all that.

(Also: Mr. Lojban I got yr joke)

The other day I was driving down one of karachi's swanky boulevards (it wasn't flooded) and I saw a waiter walking by from one of the restaurants. I had to do a double take when I saw that the apron he was wearing actually bore the swastika and color scheme of the flag of the Third Reich. I nearly defenestrated myself with laughter. If any Jewish person saw that he or she would have passed out.

I should mention that my missing a joke in no way relates to how close the joke was to its mark. I'm as clueless as a Pakistani waiter in a Nazi Flag Apron, which I presume has an entirely different meaning than if he was say... in Cleveland.
