My favorite is ruth: 'compassion or pity'. When it was overtaken by its evil cousin ruthless and left to languish in obscurity, I don't know. Also bale (evil, anguish) seems to have been cowed by baleful (and probably the p.r. machine of Christian Bale). I'm guessing Old-English-derived words suffer this fate more often than those derived from French/Latin, which makes ambit a rarish bird.

These are great--I had no idea you could use "ruth" and "bale" that way. I looked up "dole" to see if it suffered the same fate, but apparently it has no relationship to "doleful." (No doubt thanks to the pineapple industry's evil machinations).
