I am also a former Catholic, post-V2 raised and this Latin Rite deal is just another in a series of steps B16 has taken to roll back the V2 changes while all the time claiming he is merely going back to the "spirit" of the council. It's like he's taken a page from the Bush manual on how to destroy something while claiming to be preserving it. (See habeas corpus, right to privacy, etc.)

Does this mean women will have to wear napkins on their head in church again? I remember one of my sister telling me how, if you forgot to bring a hat with you to church, you'd have to bobby-pin a handkerchief to your 'do.

Weird times, weird times....

Ex-Catholic: check. I can't figure out why they didn't remove the anti-Semitic line from the liturgy. Could it be that SSPX insisted on it? I also can't figure out how this is going to work in practice. Priests who have never even heard the TM will be asked to learn it. It's one thing for a 19-year-old seminarian to learn a poorly-understood foreign script, quite another for a 45-year-old.

I predict lots of priestly lip-synching.

As a alter boy I used to work for an angry old priest who thought Vatican 2 was the beginning of the end. I see some of the same disdain for human nature and rationality in the words and actions of Ratzinger. The only good that will come from it will be the continued erosion of influence of the Catholic church.

Re: Elend -- it's like Serge Gainsbourg married Merzbow and had a baby that only listened to Dead Can Dance! and maybe, occasionally, This Mortal Coil.
I liked it! It'll provide much needed respite from the endless cycle of sunshiney days out here...
