It wounded me to learn that the guys from Youth Brigade ended up into swing... at first... and then I remembered they were from SoCal and it all made sense.

You hit the nail on the head re: Grey Gardens; brilliant, but man! Don't know if I could ever sit though it again. Not the most heartwrenching, depressing doc. I've seen though -- that would have to be this

Also, it is set in the mid-70s...Seeing documentary footage from that era instantly presses a sad and suffocating button for me.

For me too. And I can't really put my finger on why that is really. Those were my teen years so I guess maybe that was a big part of it. But it sure seemed like the whole country was going to hell in a tremendous hurry. Dark times.

Old news and documentary footage--I guess that's a common phenomenon. It only applies to years I was alive because stuff pre-1964 or so doesn't hit me. Anything after though, and especially if it's set someplace I've been, triggers waves of reactions--some good and some bad. Perhaps the visual cues evoke feelings we have reconciled with but not resolved? The happy feelings are all good, of course, but there are things that strike me with a devastating sense of loss. Mid-70s through early 80s for me... alternately joyful or crushing. No neutral to speak of.

I seems to me that the period for cultural recycling is pretty consistent at twenty years, so I think you should expect swing dancing to return to the masses in another 12 or 13 years, but you could start workin' on some hep steps anytime, and be ahead of the curve.

I think the cultural recycling curve is moving up to 15 years, which puts the swing dancing revival somewhere around 2012 or 2013. Swing is near the bottom of things in need reviving, but if it's any help, I'm going to be walking around all this week saying "that's off-time jive, queenie!"

I hated the 70s even though I was only 8 when they ended.
