I prefer the Rice Miller incarnation of Sonny Boy Williamson. An absolutely wicked man.

No way, taking someone else's identity, too weird.

I agree with Eric.

Eric only stole guitar solos lick for lick, but he did develop his own personality eventually. I liked him better when he was imitating Albert and Freddie King. When he moved on to JJ Cale and John Martyn, it wasn't so much fun.

Yeah, and when I started copying myself by doing a lounge version of Layla, well...

I edited a kids' book on the blues once. It had Robert Johnson on the cover, and in order to get permission to use the photo, RJ's estate manager had to approve the whole manuscript. I'll never forget that guy going off on Sonny Boy -- apparently we had placed the wrong photo . . .

Cool scene in The Last Waltz with Robbie Robertson talking about meeting Sonny Boy Williamson Legend has it they were supposed to record an album with him, similar to what Clapton and the Fleetwood Mac crew had done with Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf and Big Walter. It never came about though and that's too bad. Sonny Boy didn't think too much about the ability of the English "kids" to play the blues, but given his disposition probably wouldn't have said so if he did. Can't help wondering how he would have sounded with The Band.

I imagine that once you've played a song four billion times, it's a relief to change the arrangement, though.

Saw Bob Dylan a few times when he did really serious reworkings of older songs and it worked out great, at least to my ears. Layla Lounge was a fright. It was like the Valley of the Dolls (Valium of the Dolls) version.

"I imagine that once you've played a song four billion times, it's a relief to change the arrangement, though": True - but that doesn't make the newer version suck any less hard. I mean, you don't want to eat filet mignon every day - but that doesn't mean you want to eat five-day-old Arby's from the back of your fridge, either.
