Columbus' Gay Street, one of our grand old one-way crosstown thoroughfares, is being rerouted to two-way, so naturally the local wags have rechristened it Bi Street.
I thought the ID Project referred to my family.

I would gladly take a day-long workshop with the Janet I-D's.

Beh. Publicists are always exaggerating singers' ranges (I've actually read that Mariah Carey is supposed to have a seven-octave range - which, as snopes.com points out, would mean she sounds like Barry White in her lowest register. A key fact is no one ever cites high and low notes, recorded in studio or live, to establish a singer's range. Carey, for example, is capable of some freakishly high "whistle" notes - I think someone actually has verified her singing something like a G# two-and-a-half octaves above middle C (G#6), and supposedly some singer is listed in the Guinness Book of world records as singing a C10 (which is like two octaves above a piano), to which I call complete and utter bullshit. You can record someone singing a *very* high note (say, C7), and using filters, bring out the overtones so it sounds octaves higher. I think the only way you could verify such extreme claims is live, not on a recording, for that very reason. Anyway, so if Carey's highest recorded note is a G#6 (plausible), in order to have a five-octave range, she'd have to be able to sing (sing - not grunt or belch) the G# on the 4th fret of the E-string of a bass guitar. Barry White might have been able to sing that low...but I'm doubtful. (Trivia: the bass guy in "Koyaanisqatsi"? He's singing, if I recall, a D just below the lowest note of the guitar).

Emendation: "A key fact is that high and low notes are rarely cited" - since I go on to quote someone citing one...

People--did no one understand what I found amusing about that Wiki excerpt?

grigorss - 2007-08-17 00:22:38
Well, over and above the fact that I doubt there's much basis for comparison between Ms. DeLuna and Mr. Van Vliet, it is kind of amusing that she seems to enjoy duets with John Merrick...

In my fog of lecherous shame I missed the amusing part.

Captain Beefheart!!!

Paula - 2007-08-17 12:37:38
Yes...I wonder if that didn't used to say, like, Julie Andrews, and then some CB fan intervened wikily.

Greg - 2007-08-17 12:53:53
I think it would be cool to hear Captain Beefheart's voice come out of that cute little girl. They've been saying for years, by the way, that CB could sing in 5 octaves. Always found that suspect...
