Totally agree on the new RK. This is a very streamlined, direct album. It's like they transferred their quirkiness from the lyrics/structure of the songs to the production/arrangements. I mean, you're right it all sounds like a late 70's rock-disco record. I really like it.

Yeah--good songs go a long way with me, no matter what the production is like.

The Rilo Kiley album sounds like Buildings and Grounds by Papas Fritas. Which is to say more like a 00s band trying to sound like a 70s band than an actual 70s band.

That chimp research is pretty remarkable -- whether they're "counting" or just "memorizing" (although, if they're memorizing in a particular order, aren't they also "counting" -- in some sense of the word?). I also found the narration regarding evolution well-expressed; and something that needs saying.

I don't know why the chimp commentator rejects the idea that a human being might develop really good short-term recall after the amount of practice as the chimps got. Seems like a testable proposition.

This may be obvious but a good example of short-term recall development is the average video game. It's cool though that chimps consistently prove themselves to be brighter than we give them credit for AND perhaps in some ways, moreso than humans. They're exceptional, ain't they???

Hey I love chimps as much as the next guy/gal and think they are great. However, they would NEVER have come up with this ability to "count", "memorize" whatever you want to call it, on their own. They are very, very good at responding to changes in their environment. They are highly adaptable. Is that "smart"? Is that "intelligent"? Methinks one of the things that differentiate us humans is our ability to not just react to changes in our environment, but to shape our environment to our needs. For good or ill, it's something we do that a lot of other animals don't.

(Tom is a little bitter since losing his job to a chimp)

Yes, and I was just starting to get the hang of it too! If I could just remember things better....

Some knucklehead is going to make chimps smoke ganja now to see if it impairs their short term memory... or makes them like the Grateful Dead.

Q: What did the Deadhead say when someone took away his drugs?

A: This band sucks!
