Given that trains give you a better sense of where things are, how about the ol' fact that two people were killed by a white shark within easy running distance of Matawan? (Maybe within the modern city limits.)

Bob, at first I thought you were talking about this news story, but now I realize that you're speaking of the Matawan Maneater!

I'm with you on train travel -- there's no better method of mechanized transport to give one a sense that you're actually going from one place to another --and the free time to appreciate it. I took a trip up the CA coast to Vancouver, B.C. 5 or 6 years ago -- and would like to take the trans-Canadian line from Vancouver to Montreal one day (which I hear is one of the most scenic train journeys one can take anywhere).

Yeah, I had a hankering to get on the Montreal-bound train this weekend myself.

My other complaint about central Ohio (the first is the lack-of-beachfront complaint) is that there is no passenger rail service here. My dad and Benjamin are both train buffs, and each had a birthday (8th and 68th) this weekend, so next Sunday we are treating both to a ride on the Canal Limited excursion train at Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

As for the shore noggin, was someone reading the new Chris Grabenstein book too closely???

... a hankering to get on the Montreal-bound train... myself.

I'm supposin' that's because of the NYC heat wave -- but it's supposed to hit at least 103 in my section of La-La land today. Yes, I know -- "... it's a dry heat", but so's a crematory, and I'd complain if I suddenly found myself in one of those as well.

If you find yourself in a moral quandary in New Jersey you can always go get some Jesus On The Boardwalk.

I'm surprised that Greg didn't reply to the Grabenstein comment--he loaned me CG's first book a while back (I haven't gotten to it) plus the author contacted him after he talked about the novel on his globbe.

I really liked that Grabenstein book that I read. I felt bad that I said I'd found it in a box at the curb, but the fact remains I've found some of the best books I've read in years were other peoples' castoffs. And I love shore town culture... It's probably the most American of all America. Even in Brighton or Blackpool!!!!

Greg: if you really liked TILT A WHIRL, I recommend the next 2 in the series: MAD MOUSE and WHACK A MOLE. Should they not appear in a nearby box at the curb (lucky!), they're probably available at the library. Very entertaining w/good stories, pacing, plot development and plenty of slightly fictionalized shore culture.
