God I love "Life is Sweet" -- I got misty just clicking on the link! How can that not be on DVD?? Because, you made me want to see it right this second. Grrr... I always put that movie in a category of 2, though I do not what the criteria of the category are. But the other movie is "Trust." Two of a kind -- but what kind is that, exactly? I don't know.

"2" as a ranking?

TRUST is way up there on my List. Which, b.t.w., I never got to work on b/c I got a ride to Jersey a few weeks ago and didn't take the bus. I think I may need to address The List soon.

Sorry, that wasn't very clear... I meant, there is a category of movies under which only two movies (Trust and Life Is Sweet) fall. I group them this way in my head, though I really couldn't tell you the criteria that merit inclusion in this particular category. Is that clearer? Now, then, I see your confusion and I raise you my confusion: What on earth are you talking about, rides to Jersey, and the rest? Are you making some kind of top-secret movie list?

Ah, ok, that makes perfect sense.

As for my List, and bus rides: I had mentioned in passing rearranging my list of Top 20 movies, and I was going to do it on a ride out to NJ.

The truth is, the last time I made the list was in 1996, so of course it's in disarray now. And doesn't seem to actually exist on paper anymore. So it will need to be constructed out of scratch.

I am a list-maker, love-taker, don't you mess around with me.

As for the similarities between LiS and TRUST...Hmmm. Intriguing concept.

Oh, there's a coupla' dozen movies and/or TV shows that I ask the question "Why isn't this on DVD?" about. 90% of the time, the answer involves some sort of legal clearance issue regards some element of the film in question. Chris Elliott's Get a Life, for example, isn't available on DVD (at least, not a complete series run) because of the complications and cost inherent in clearing both the theme-song (R.E.M.'s Stand) and the various pop-tunes that were used in almost every episode -- the rights for these songs were not negotiated 'in perpetuity' -- so the whole process of acquiring clearance to use them has to be re-done for purposes of the DVD.
I don't know if that's the case with Life Is Sweet (which certainly is one of Leigh's best films), but most likely that's the cause. Interestingly enough, the film is available as a region 2 disc, which you could order through Amazon UK (at a prohibitive cost, I might add) -- but you'd need an All-region DVD player w/ PAL conversion to watch it.

Coincidentally, I saw Jane Horrocks (from Life is Sweet) on PBS last night, in The Amazing Mrs Pritchard, where she played the titular character, the Prime Minister! From Nicola to the PM in 17 years.

I came for the Bubble... I stayed for the Little Voice.

I loved her as Bubble and Little Voice but I think Jim Broadbent stole that movie with that incredibly smarmy and hilarious turn as the emcee ("Mr. Boo") of that dingy nightclub. Michael Caine was terrific too.

Steve, did you buy the album as an import?

Loved reading your reaction to the Seeger documentary.Yet another Paula-recommended movie I must see. My parents were big Weaver fans. They had an album - Live at Carnegie Hall! I can still see every detail of the album cover in my mind, that's the shame of CDs. I didn't know Seeger wrote Turn, Turn, Turn. wow. Check out one of my favorite Weaver songs "Wasn't That a Time" written by Lee Hayes. (There's also a documentary by that name.)
