Ooh! Favorite subway stations (off the top of my head): 21st St (Van Alst), G train in Long Island City. Almost unused, with an impressive array of stalactites and other signs of neglect. Bowery, JM trains, the least used station in Manhattan Smith n' 9th, FG trains, which is, like 90 feet in the air 63rd st. F train, Upper East Side, which is like, 100 feet below ground And pour a little out for the old Stillwell Ave. (B, N, F, D) Coney Island Stop, which was awesomely decrepit, with the world's sketchiest looking diner at the entrance.

Uh-oh! This warrants a whole entry, with photos, too. But I will say this:

Bowery, JM trains, the least used station in Manhattan

That was one of my home stations in 1999 or so, and I always felt a fondness for it, and all the decrepit J/M/Z stops.

A homage to your fav station http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/stations?216:446 Every station has a webpage devoted to it, some with tons of history, others with just pictures. I agree on Smith n 9th; the view on the f is worth 2 bucks alone...

I foresee a total transformation--Paula Arbus perhaps? An IHoP revolution! I also like Smith & Ninth on the F line. It's especially cool now that it's clad in black faux-leather (pleather?) and studs.

Smith-and-9th is great for several reasons: one, the height of the platform, previously mentioned, makes you feel like you're perhaps in another city....two: the name lends itself perfectly to calling it "Smif-n-Wesson"....three: it is an exciting commingling of the sexy, urbane F/G lines with the stodgy but reliable N/R/M lines, and it is the stop I take to go to the only remaining branch of Hollywood Video.

Swee' P... the NRM transfer is at 9th St. and 4th Avenue... which is a pretty sex above ground station too. No pleather though.

Oops, wait, that's the 9th Street-4th Ave stop I'm thinking of. Well, reasons #1 and #2 still stand.

The leather/studds on the F line came as some chunks of concrete started to drop. There is a playground near smith and 9th that is under the El. Its a really sad little place....

I used to park my truck in a lot underneath the El over there. (no longer have the truck) that is a sad little playground. The thought that people planned that as a park fills me with a mix of sadness and shame.
