Wait. The animals talked? Why isn't a big deal being made of this?

Very nice Love Boat story. I used to watch Love Boat pretty faithfully as a wee lad, albeit without ritual. My appreciation of it did not wane when I started public school & was teased for my resemblance to Isaac the bartender, a resemblance I could not convincingly contradict.

Oh, wow, that never occurred to me before but you do look like Isaac. And now I will not be able to erase the mental image of Isaac/Mr Lojban shooting his imaginary pistols, by way of greeting, at viewers.

Is your "local movie house" that you rave about the Alpine? I really hope it is. I like hearing bad things about my place of business.

Eric: I tried to be discreet, but you've blown my cover.

I saw two movies at the Alpine this week--Enchanted and Compass. Both nights, the theaters were almost completely empty--it was me, my movie chum, and one other couple in both cases. Oh, and during Enchanted, some guy wandered in, sat down for about ten minutes, and wandered out. Perhaps he was pleasuring himself during the rats-doing-housework scene.

I also need to point out that the temperature in the theater was just barely above the temperature outside.

All this makes me sad, b/c I really don't want the theater to go out of business. I love being within walking distance of a movie house.

Now you know why it is called the ALPINE? ;-)

I started reading The Golden Compass, and then got distracted (by work and... life, I suppose) and didn't get beyond the first hundred pages or so; what I did read was quite entertaining and much better written than this sort of thing usually is -- but even the small section I got through seemed to have more plot than one could easily squeeze into a two hour movie -- so your review doesn't surprise me.
Also, old moldering movie houses -- I love 'em, but they're disappearing left and right out here in L.A. The Rialto, in Pasadena -- where they filmed some scenes from The Player, amongst other films, just closed this -past Fall.

You aren't saying anything about the Alpine that I haven't heard (or experienced) before. The heat is "being worked on," and it goes in and out. And during the week the number of people total for the day barely reaches triple digits. And come on, that rats doing housework scene is HOT! Who can blame that guy?

No argument there.

Damn - almost typed "blogstop.com" in my URL link again. Sometimes, given their service, that seems apt. Anyway: I haven't seen the movie of The Golden Compass, but I strongly suggest you read the books regardless. I really think Pullman brought his world - so different from, yet in many ways parallel to, our own - wonderfully to life, and the characters and situations are compelling, complex, and brushing with a light touch on profundity. (Pullman was a Milton scholar in an earlier life, and it shows - but not so's it's in your face or anything.)
