Well spoken as regards the Maharishi -- agree with you completely as regards the creepy cultishness of the so-called "TM movement"; but also agree with you as to the effectiveness of the technique itself, which I have been practicing for almost a year now. Maybe David Lynch will just take over the reins of the organization? At least we'd get some interesting movies out of it...

I also have a healthy respect for Lent; myself I'm giving up restraint for the next forty days.

Good article on Petty...although I had to laugh at the line about Allan Bloom as a "brilliant conservative." I've read The Closing of the American Mind, and it's pathetic. Completely misunderstands rock'n'roll, and shot through with a truly bizarre anxiety. The passages about Michael Jackson - okay, Jackson is a weirdo - are much more revealing of Bloom's psychological problems than they are of Jackson. 'Course, Bloom was closeted at the time - that probably had something to do with it. When I found out he was gay, but closeted then, its weird tone made more sense...but wasn't any more accurate or understanding.
