Caught In Bruges myself this weekend, and "po-mo trope of soulful, philosophical hitmen' aside, thought it was a good little film, too. It made we want to a.) Visit Bruges, b.) go to a "pub" c.) avoid movie sets with midge... -- excuse me, dwarves, on site.

Word. I'd never thought about Belgium as a vacation destination til now. This film should do for Bruges what Blue Velvet did for Lumberton, NC.

There's some Paul Simon song I always think of whenever I hear that word where it goes "didn't I see you at the cinematographer's party?" (Later PS, probably Graceland...?) BTW, Did you see any of the Grammys last night? Amy via satellite brought the house down. Scary good. (Emphasis, I guess, on "scary.")

Which reminds me -- I've been meaning to thank Greg for ranting on my behalf the other morning.

Re "cinematographer": I think that's due to the Simpsonsesque distortion of words with the extra syllable "ma-" - "edumacation" etc. - which is probably derived from "whatchamacallit." But it gives that little "ma-" syllable an aura of superfluity. Which is far, far better than an air of superflatulence. Ha: IHoP fart joke! Whoo-hoo!

Thank you, 2fs--a first! And your reasoning about "ma" is correct.

Philip: I saw the YouTube clip of Amy W's performance, and it was as if all the stupid stories about her in the press just melted away from my consciousness. She's cool, her music is good, her whole shtick is enjoyable.

Philip--thanks for your patience. Paula--I agree. I think Amy did a great job. So many Grammy performances are overwrought and well... crappy. Whatever it is she's doing it's cool with me... the musical side anyway. That said, I still prefer Sharon Jones and that's the best way to hear the Dap Kings.

I've been in Belgium twice but not in about 20 years. Charming little country. Both times only passing through though as it used to be the least expensive place to fly into and stay a couple days whilst arranging other junkets.

Good point!!

Chris: yeah, the movie is like a living picture postcard. It makes Bruges look really appealing.

Are any other last.fm'ers getting friend requests from total WTF strangers? I haven't got the hang of this web 2.0 thing, because I don't like "befriending" people I don't actually know.

Paula - 2008-02-19 06:07:57
Yeah, Last.fm is more about, I think, people with similar tastes befriending each other. And then they can complain about their real friends...
