There's a couple of songs that actually qualify as "a country classic" [which my uncle is fond of saying about things nonmusical] on Jason Ringenberg's album "All Over Creation". One is a cover of the Gun Club's "Mother of Earth"... and the fact that it's able to sound like a traditional gem is a testimony to what a good songwriter Jeffrey Lee truly was. And the other is a definitely improved version of Jason & the Scorcher's "Bible and a Gun". [Oh, and there's a Japanese version of "Fervor" + another album out at the moment, for cheap, for anyone who wants to get around to getting that on CD (used copies had been going for $50+)]. I would find it a little odd that two of my favorite "sounds like real country" sources, Jason's ballads and Alison Krause's teenage efforts (first and third LP) are out of Illinois, had I never passed through southern Illinois... but, as someone from just north of there, who I was recently talking to about that, said: "It's as country as it gets" (which he said was kind of epitomized by seeing, in the back of a passing pickup, a bear).

A bear! Dude, way to bury the headline.

I think Michael Stipe's lyrics have taken a downturn since they started being printed on CD jackets, but I've still listened Accelerate at least twice a day since I got it on Tuesday.

These things happen:: Alison Krause's lyrics (or rather, the lyrics she sang) have certainly taken a downturn as a Grammy-winning adult. I just recently got her "I've got that Old Feeling" album (done at 18, her third) and "Too Late to Cry". It's bemusing on the latter album (done when she was 15) to hear her sing: "I don't drink... as much... as I used to / Yeah lately, it's just not... my style / And hard times... don't last... like they used to / They pass quicker... like when I... was a child...". Definitely wasn't shooting for a Miley Cyrus vibe (though Miley seems alright as a person). The funniest thing was that Alison had a more "old soul" sound then than now.

Stipes' lyrics have always lacked something to me, but his voice draws you in. he really commits to it. I seem to remember a spoof (maybe john candy's fishin' musician? that's me in the corner... that's me with the trout I caught..that's me in a party hat, etc.) Lately my corny mind has been thinking what a great campaign song Cuyahoga (sp?) would be. let's put our heads together, and start a new country up...Barack Obama!(or a suitable leader of one's choice). of course skipping the stipestyle obscure references to souvenirs and old rivers.

Cuyahoga

That's a nice idea.

Huh, I just remembered that Jason & the Scorchers collaborated with Stipe on "Fervor".
