A. Tearing Down the Wall of Sound, an excellent Phil Spector biography by Mick Brown. It's the greatest. Phil was a really funny guy when he wasn't destroying the lives of everyone around him. B. Waking up next to E.

I love Guy Maddin. I can heartily recommend My Winnipeg, which I saw in Toronto last year, which comes out Friday. it might be my favorite of those that I've seen of his.

Eric, I am planning on seeing it--and it's playing at my favorite NYC theater (IFC).

I love Guy Maddin so much that I'm pretty sure he thinks I'm stalking him (albeit in a non-sexual way) since I've been at every L.A. premiere he's made an appearance at. He's definitely at the point where he squints his eyes a bit, and (I'm sure) thinks to himself "oh... -- it's this odd fellow again".
Actually he seems quite the fine fellow; I mentioned at a Q&A he was at that I couldn't track down any copies of the scores for Careful or Twilight of the Ice Nymphs; he asked for my address and mailed me CD's of both! If you're going to idolize an artist, it might as well be an appreciative one...

I'm rereading Lethem's The wall of the sky, the wall of the eye. Just wonderful. I love his early stuff. -- Daily ritual? Checking the political blogs. It's a failing. -- Guy Maddin! Only one I've seen is The saddest music in the world. I have to get round to seeing the other one. I was sad to miss the live narrations of Brand upon the brain, one of which was done by John Ashbery.

Er, other ones.

(a) Mick Brown's well-researched, engaging biography Tearing Down the Wall of Sound, the rise and fall of Phil Spector. Spector, who gave us the amazing single You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling and a handful of other good recordings, was an entertaining fellow, and Brown captures the gun-totin', champagne-swillin', musician-imprisonin', woman-slappin', skull-shootin' imp in all of his splendour and complexity; and (b) striking the elevator's "down" button as I prepare to depart the workplace (while mentally tearing off the monkey suit).

and a handful of other good recordings

Hee...I admire producers/auteurs who have a distinctive sound, but I also wonder if they aren't doing a disservice to the artists they produce.

Also, as regards reading; who has time for books when Van C. is publishing a new blog?

I was going to suggest my blog as required daily reading, not because it is, but because I like high stats on the statcounter... but then I decided not to get involved with shameless self-promotion.

Okay yes, my blog is my daily ritual, but as far as books... I am reading a book of poetry by Charles Simic that I'm enjoying immensely and I really loved Lush Life by Richard Price.

Hee...I admire producers/auteurs who have a distinctive sound, but I also wonder if they aren't doing a disservice to the artists they produce. For the most part, Spector saw himself as the artist, the songwriters and session musicians as the next most important contributors, and the singers the most interchangeable/least-worthy of respect aspect. "The Crystals" were essentially whoever was around when he decided it was time to make a new Crystals record! Oh, Phil.
