There is something about Maddin's over-the-top campiness that is the very opposite of detached irony

... and that, I think, is Maddin's greatest gift as a filmmaker; the techniques and level of artifice he employs in his films would seem to insure distancing the audience from what they are viewing; but instead -- at least speaking for myself -- I've found each to have a powerful emotional resonance. An emotive core, easily visible; even for all the negative scratches, finger smudges, and sloppy splices which cover it.

I hate winter...

Loathing for an entire season? Sheesh! Summer's not my favorite season in L.A. -- but I can think of lots of other places where its plenty nice.

Loathing for an entire season

Correction: I like winter for the first 12 hours or so.

Autumn and winter are my favorite seasons, by far... though both can be tiresome. Spring in NYC is too short and the summer... I've no use for NYC summers though I love it in other places... even hotter places.

It's entirely appropriate that Maddin looks like a hockey fan. I mean, he is...but you know. Speaking of Winnipeg, by coincidence today I was listening to another of that city's finest exports, the Weakerthans. John K. Samson is one of the few lyricists whose work compels me to actually listen to what he's singing.

I love the Weakerthans! And yes, I agree that his lyrics are good. I'd forgotten that they are Canadian--and Winnipeggian no less.
