First thing we do, let's kill all the economists.

I believe this "long tail" thing happened in the music industry, or at least began happening ages ago. There has never before been so large a variety of music available through so many outlets. And few industries have been "niche marketed" as deeply as popular music. It's been absolutely dissected. I would attribute these factors more to the financial woes of the industry moreso than downloading and/or piracy. There was a time when a large record company was supported by only a small percentage of their artists--the superstars. Now it's much harder to create a superstar as their potential target audience is likely to be much smaller than it might have been twenty years ago. Theoretically this should give the artists more clout at big companies as a label needs to sell more units from more artists to pay the rent... it hasn't seemed to trickle down yet. Then again there is also less incentive for musicians to go to a major now. Blah... I agree with Philip.
