Hank Snow is in the Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Fame (ah, but did selling 70 million records get him on the first [and HAS there been more than one?] ballot...?)... but I ain't got no idea whether whatsisname is in the Newfoundland Country Music Hall of Fame, or if there is one.

If anyone cares: I found out via the Encyclopedia of Popular Music that Mr. Bates's years were 1937 - 1997, and he was in fact influenced heavily by Mr. Snow. He recorded 80+ albums! And yet so very little info available....

That's the problem with having recorded too many albums; they don't get tackled individually - or at all, I spect, in Smiley's case - on CD. Frinstance, the only Hank Snow album I want a CD of, Heartbreak Trail, (his better-than-the-originals tribute to the Sons of the Pioneers, with Tumbling Tumbleweeds, etc), is only available in a more-than-two-hundred-dollar box set.

In fact, even though it's a $300, twelve CD box set, it's merely "Volume 3" in the "Singing Ranger" series of four. Were you aware that Colonel Parker was Snow's manager, and that Snow lent Parker to Elvis after Snow gave Elvis his first big exposure (an appearance on Grand Ole Opry, where Elvis wasn't well received)?
