I can't figure out for the life of me why portrait painters from before the invention of photography didn't paint their subjects in a more photo-realistic style for the eventual benefit of those of us studying history. In that painting of Lady Jane, she looks just like every other woman in a portrait from that period.

I flunked Art History.

Don't get me started on Western royal anecdotes. The never-discussed abjection of Edward VIII? The steely courage of Juan Carlos I? I think my favorite is the enduring image of Pope Julius II, at the age of 63, personally leading the army of the Papal States to a successful conquest of Perugia and Bologna in 1506.
