One of the most tedious and annoying two hours I spent in a theatre last year-and it was a week after some awful teeth removal which didn't help matters much.

I fully expected to be disappointed by El Cantante so it softened it all a bit when it wasn't quite as bad as I expected. It did come off like a telenovela though and that's too bad. And if they wanted someone who sounded like Rosie Perez they should have just hired her! Hector Lavoe did deserve better. I can't say I didn't enjoy it at all though but the musical interludes were too short. Perhaps a documentary would have better served him. You just never got a good sense from El Cantante of who he was or all these other stars for that matter.

They should really do a film on the whole Fania All-Stars scene. Ralphie Mercado alone would be a fascinating character study. That he prevailed, failed, survived and revived in an industry hostile to outsiders is impressive... not that he didn't have to be ruthless to make it happen. CBS/Sony was scared to death of him. When they bought out Marc Anthony they put in a rider that said he had to stay out of the music industry for 5 years. What they didn't know is he had already bankrolled a company in his daughter's name so at the end of 5 years he was set up...

Hugo Largo was the opening band the first time I ever won tickets from a radio station to see a concert (they opened for the Feelies at The Ritz, I think). I recall enjoying them...the 2 basses were very very bass-y. If I ever listen to them again, it will be on a stereo with a lot of bass.
