I see that the opera-singer-turned-socialite's (or should it be the other way 'round?) name is "Cobina Wright"...

-- but it might as well be "Susan Alexander".

Interesting, hadn't thought of that.

The Wiki-oracle tells us that:

"...Several other candidates for the basis of the Kane personality have been suggested, the most likely being that of Jules Brulatour...Brulatour's second and third wives, Dorothy Gibson and Hope Hampton, both fleeting stars of the silent screen who later had marginal careers in opera, are also believed to have provided inspiration for the Susan Alexander character...."

I guess these minor opera stars were comin' out of the woodwork back then.

"I guess these minor opera stars were comin' out of the woodwork back then." I'm so glad that they're not coming out of the woodwork now. Dating-over-40 is weird enough!!!

I find most tropicalia makes me rabid for the same reason that mall and elevator music do. I generally find it phony and obnoxious, which perhaps isn't fair but I can't help it.

That Bay Ridge sure is a wacky place! http://beehivehairdresser.com/2008/09/12/crazy-super-gone-plain-old-crazy/

Sorry, but this is too good: a whole "crazy super" sub-category: http://beehivehairdresser.com/category/crazy-super-signs/ (and for some reason my work computer doesn't know how to spell my name.)

Paula - 2008-09-16 20:48:44
That's right around the corner from me!I see those signs on my runs sometime, and I'm pretty sure I've seen that crazy super, but didn't realize he had a following!

My super is not only not crazy, he's super-duper.

No tropicalia for you? That makes meow loudly and mournfully to myself in an empty room. Like, Gilberto Gil, "Rainha Do Mar," phony and obnoxious? No, no, no!

Not sure who you're addressing, but the "phony" remark was Greg's. Personally, I find it a little precious and/or arty at times. But I'm sure there are all kinds of exceptions, so thanks for the heads up. I like GG's sambas.

GG Allin did sambas?

Paula - 2008-09-17 18:36:21
People really do not give him enough credit.

Perhaps it's just bad associations with tropicalia... the way it was re-packaged and sold here. It's just all very "ice storm" to me. Or I get pictures of Dean Martin, Peter Lawford and Hef, smarmy and grinning and drunk at the Playboy mansion. Too slick.
