I read Goodnight, Steve McQueen a few months ago, after hearing Doug laugh out loud before reading me passages. Nothing revelatory, but it's mostly a sweet story, and Wener seems to capture some details of Band Life nicely. The details about practice-space carpets particularly linger.

Cool--I have that one on reserve at the liberry.

What an odd list. What are Jamiroquai & ADF doing in there?

At first I thought you meant the list of predictions.

Yeah, there are many inaccuracies on that page--Madchester bands, etc.

"Britpop" never cohered into an actual style for me - it just seemed a label for a bunch of British bands at a particular time. Whatever.

Also: I thought "topical salsa" was your joke...you know, cuz salsa is sorta tropical, so...

DUDE! Salsa is all about Nueva York! It can feel pretty tropical here come July though. The Brit Pop thing fairly well eluded me in its appeal also. Seemed more style than substance for the most part, despite varying styles. There were singles here and there that I liked a lot, but they were few and far between. Actually I think the Brian Jonestown Massacre was better than all of them put together, but of course... only Anglophiles there.

I loved both Echobelly and Sleeper back in the day. Although these days, when one of their tunes pops up on my random iPod jogging playlist, I sometimes can't tell which artist it is. I just call them collectively "Sleeperbelly".

Sleeper! I happened to be over there when She's a Good Girl was on the radio a lot. I thought that was a great single -- I think I even bought the CD/EP. She was an interesting figure in interviews, too -- I didn't know she had a book. Now I want to read it. And by the way, do Pulp and Oasis figure in your definition of "BritPop"? Cuz those first two Oasis albums are kind of fantastic in the right mood, and Jarvis Cocker is an absolute treasure.

Pulp and Oasis are at the forefront, and I just never got them. I liked Jarvis's album from last year, though, and I like Richard Hawley's solo stuff.
