YAAAAAAY! Our country changed overnight!

It is like the reverse of 9/11--everyone is too excited and happy to work. And some local victories here, too.

On a sobering note, I am so sorry about Prop 8. That is inhuman and unbelievable.

I was much more profoundly moved by the reality of this victory than I expected to be. Funny though that it was John McCain who was the very first person to mention the historical significance of voting in the first African-American president. People have sort of beat around the bush on that... no pun intended on the Bush thing.

He is such a hack--I was completely unmoved by his speech. I interpreted that whole preamble as "OK, sure, everybody voted for Obama...but only cuz he's black! Waah!"

One of the sad ironies of the election: The large African American turnout that helped to elect Obama also sealed the deal on Prop 8

I wasn't moved by McCain's concession at all. I just found it curious that few people mentioned it until that moment.

Here in Harlem, we all noticed that Barak Obama is black.

Paula - 2008-11-06 02:37:43
I didn't notice he was black until early last week!

Also, I meant to mention, MacG, that I didn't interpret your comment to mean that you were moved by McCain's speech, I was just adding that on.

I watched the speeches with my mom yesterday morning and I cried like a baby! People around the world are completely electrified by this event. But I have to say that in the post-election analysis, I saw more black faces on tv in twelve hours than I have in perhaps an entire year.

Also, Michelle Obama's presence in the White House is going to teach an awful lot of people that black women are much more than either helpless victims of crack, AIDS, on welfare, etc. etc. The effects are going to be tremendous, not just in America, but also in Europe, with a sizeable black population that has not been respected or treated well at all.

No It Did Not

Yeh, sucks about Prop 8, but it will go down like the rest of the hate legislation. I heard it was the Obama Hispanic vote that tipped prop 8 to pass. But I think it was really all the freaking out of state Christian churches that funded the ads and hate lit that flooded CA in the last month or so. Now I know how they feel when we come to their state and go door to door to get them to vote for progressive candidates. Maybe there should be a rule that goes both ways...I won't influence elections in your home state and you will stay the hell out of mine.

It's not "blacks" or "Hispanics" or any other ethnicity that made Prop 8 win. It's bigoted homophobes, of whatever race, color, religion, etc. That's the salient quality of their vote on this issue. Why the need to search for some other aspect of these voters' being, as if that explains anything? It doesn't: being homophobic does.

Bina, c'mon, everybody over here already knew that Oprah and Missy Elliot RUN this shit.

Bina - 2008-11-06 08:33:32
Bob, I wish! (well, no I don't. A world run by Oprah would be too horrible to contemplate.)

Agreed!

Big protest march against prop 8 last night. They handed out a list of names of people who gave money to support prop 8. It scared me a little. I agree, it is not an ethnicity but bigotry that identifies the people who voted for the measure. It is too easy to point fingers at a certain group and blame them when really it is just intolerance.
