All there is... is consciousness.

I think the "mind" is less localizable than typically considered. Perhaps it's more profitably considered as a sort of interface: it's the function that occurs when we're coupled with our environment - by analogy, consider the control panel of a car stereo that's removable (for theft prevention, say). By itself, it's unremarkable; by *itself*, the guts of the stereo are unusable. Similarly, minds that develop in isolation from culture (whether by accident or in cases of gross neglect) never function properly - and of course, one might argue that "the world" does not exist without us to perceive it as such: at least, it doesn't exist as "the world," the thing we conceive of when we conceive of "the world." (Hey - Raymond Carver does philosophy!). A lot of this is the subject of Douglas Hofstadter's latest book, I Am A Strange Loop....

turn off your mind, relax, and float downstream . . . as the architectural dancer suggests, my mind is just the front panel on the car stereo of life. +++ I often slip my mind under the front seat [to hide it from thieves], but forget that it's there; I drive around unengaged. . . . +++

That pole I walked into while I was wondering where my mind stopped.
