I don't know how Paula understands Christian metalcore...but my version would be that both groups often (a) are quite doctrinaire ("is not metal!" "is too!"), seek intense experiences, see themselves as set off from the rest of the world, are intensely devoted to their "scene," and enjoy guitar solos with lots and lots of notes played very quickly. Oh wait - the last one's just the metal dudes.

To understand it, I think, you need to have felt spiritual ecstasy, which power riffs and Jesus can provide, for better or worse. Both are the last refuges of scoundrels and the deeply, deeply depressed.
Nothing beats the manic high that follows deep depression, so the question is, would being "found" by Jesus have the same pink cloud joyful rapture weight if one was not initially "lost"?
You got to be lost before you can be found. It's all about the "get yourself lifted" and that's why missionaries always go to the economically depressed areas of the world to seek their converts, and why AA is so effective.

I've had a hard time getting my head around the idea of Christian metal and Christian punk etc., but it struck me that I didn't really have to understand it. I imagine the fans enjoy it and relate to it for the same reasons that I enjoy what I do. I think my "lack of understanding" was more related to my lack of acceptance of Christian doctrine and prejudices I've developed towards the direction that American churches have taken in the last couple decades. In the end, personal choice is personal choice, I suppose.
