Rented the first season of Soap on DVD. I loved this show when I was a kid, and, inexplicably, had a mad crush on the ventriloquist, Jay Johnson.

The show has a real theatricality to it--it feels like a screwball Michael Frayn one-act more than a sitcom. And somewhere around the middle of the first season, as we become more involved with the characters and their problems, the show starts to get serious and touching, without losing its circus quality.
