2003-11-23 - 2:42 p.m. While the rest of the world is busy being underwhelmed by and uncharitable to the second Strokes release, I'm grudgingly coming around to the opinion that their debut album wasn't so bad after all. It's a simple, peppy thing, and a fun exercise in spot-the-influence. "There's Blondie...there's the Velvets...hey, that's 'American Girl'..." And I like their bass sound. But I maintain that their phenomenal rise and subsequent semi-fall have nothing to do with the quality of their music, which is basically OK if unoriginal.
