It's been brought to my attention that my slightly facetious essay about large-vs.-small stores yesterday reflects my New York provincialism. That in Smalltown, USA, a Barnes & Noble moving in would be likelier to divert the smaller population, put little stores out of business, and take money out of the community.

The engine that drove my point yesterday, though, and which I didn't articulate well enough, was the idea that when we start ascribing morality to certain practices, we are almost always doomed to uncover hipocrisy and shadows in those who supposedly practice on the "good" side. And we lose the lesson of what makes those who practice on the "bad" side successful. So the old "Starbucks is evil cuz they just...are, man" argument never sways me.
