Here's what's exciting about the 2004 Oscar nominee list:

  • LOTR gets 11 nominations, just as it should be. And it will win in all the important categories. (Of course, I was sure Howard Dean was going to sweep Iowa and NH)

  • Triplets of Belleville was rightfully nominated both for best animated feature film and best song! And that song is a killer, I can't wait to see how they will present it.

  • The best song category has some other good contenders (and no obvious Hollywood schlock) including "Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" from A Mighty Wind. One wonders if Mitch and Mickey will perfom it...

  • Keisha Castle-Hughes (Whalerider) for best actress!

  • Another possible opportunity for a Bill Murray acceptance speech (he's nominated for best actor), although the other nominees are all swell and deserving.

    Here's what's annoying about the 2004 nom's:

  • If Charlize Theron wins for Monster, I hope she has the grace this time (unlike at the Globes) to acknowledge Aileen Wournos, or her victims, or somebody other than her director for taking a chance on her own sweet li'l actressy self.

  • Diane Keaton is a fine actress, and has given many Oscar-worthy performances, but this nod for Something's Gotta Give is just silly.
