This ain't Western Union, baby.

Woo!

(No) Blood on the (LIRR) Tracks night was so much fun, and we raised somethin' like 700 dollars. That's enough to hire a lawyer for, like, a half hour, right?

This was in all regards a typical Freddy's benefit in that the musical acts were inspired, the crowd (and I do mean crowd, it was packed, thanks in part to extensive free press about the event) was extremely enthusiastic, and I felt surrounded by my tribe. Kudos to John Sharples for putting this together and getting some great ringers in addition to the usual brilliant Freddy's denizens.

I was gonna list some highlights, but truly, it was all one long highlight.

OK, OK, some highlights:

  • Hub Moore's soulful space-music take on "I Threw It All Away"
  • Anna Copacobana's "Just Like a Woman" rendered on xylophone...I guess it was her outfit (a spangly sort of baton-twirler's get up)
  • "Tangled Up in Blue" as an angry rant by the Devil's Advocates (an ad hoc offshoot of Spunk Lads)
  • Grahame Davies's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You go," which soounded less like a Dylan song and more like a lost McCartney demo...this guy's voice is like liquid French toast (for a multimedia metaphor)
  • Larch, Wonderwheels, Night Wigga, and Pleasure Mechanics re-arranging the classics to encorporate elements of ska, djole, Memphis soul, etc.
  • The Great Outdoors playin' "Lily, Rosemary..." and not missing a single word...props to Benjoya filling in on bass on a song he'd never played before, when Hub went missing
  • pretty much the whole BOTT segment of the evening.
