Mr. Tom Ronca of Los Angeles, California has been actively encouraging me (to the point where I hold a can of pepper spray before opening one of his e-mails now) to check out the work of Guy Maddin.

I finally succumbed last night, and saw The Saddest Music in the World. Thank you, Mr Ronca. If not for you I may have spent my Saturday night watching New York Minute.

Saddest Music is one of the more visually stunning movies you'll see, all grainy black & whiteness, lit like the Passion of Joan of Arc and resembling nothing so much as the dream sequence from the second episode of Twin Peaks. And yet, it's ludicrously funny...Kids in the Hall alum Mark McKinney, who embodies smarmy egotism without even saying a word, stars as an American composer determined to win the Saddest Music in the World contest by bribing contestants from other countries to play in his super-orchestra.

Among the more memorable scenes: the "Swing Low Sweet Chariot" production number and the glass prosthetic legs filled with beer.
