Vera Drake is a typically wonderful Mike Leigh film, but not for anyone squeamish about abortions or syringes or tea cozies. It's not a feel-good movie in any way, but it is thoughtful, quirkily funny, and genuinely harrowing.

Walked past a Law & Order shoot this morning outside of Joe's Pizza on Carmine Street, and realized that my brother-in-law was in this scene. He's dressed up today as Sergeant O'Malley (or Tanaka or some such) and he's got a buncha lines and a very authentic-looking badge and overcoat.

I've been informed that it's crucial that we all see the new David Gordon Green movie when it opens this weekend, so Chicagoans, LA-ans, and NYCers take note.
