2005-03-24 - 11:46 a.m. Turns out that my great-great-great-great-grand-something is Thomas Nickerson, who survived the whale-instigated ship wreck that Melville based his novel on. He was a 15-year-old cabin boy at the time. So this explains my affinity for the book, and for cabin boys. It also outs me as part-WASP (via my genteel Maryland-raised grandma who married my very Italian grandfather). And here you thought, with my charmingly mispronounced words, outlandish costumes, and old-world ways, that I was some kinda ethnic type. Shout out to Baby Party: your favorite Cap'n (not this guy, or him either) has a blog!
