2006-05-31 - 10:33 a.m. Went to Jones Beach last Thursday before it officially opened, and had a weird feeling of manufactured nostalgia. I don't remember that beach from my childhood, but I remember many, many stories about it, and by the time I got there, that was enough to make me feel misty and poignant. And then I stumbled across this beautiful De Chirico painting--fittingly entitled Nostalgia of the Infinite--and felt nostalgia both for the imaginary Jones Beach of my youth and for Thursday. Funny how that works.
