2007-04-20 - 11:33 a.m. The discussion from yesterday is still alive, but I just wanted to add: "...A white-handed gibbon eats a banana while sitting on a giant fruit display at...the opening of an anthropoid theme park called 'Friendly Monkey Valley'..." Went to the Cake Shop last night to see, theoretically, 3 sets by Eric Mingus, although I only made it through 1.5 and missed the opportunity to hear Wombat playing with him later. Still, it was a good show. Mingus reads poetry, sometimes alone, sometimes accompanying himself on bass or guitar, sometimes accompanied by a drummer or saxophone player. He also sings bluesy original songs in a gruff but surprisingly supple voice, and he's got a commanding stage presence that nevertheless telegraphs a lot of neurotic energy. I'm intrigued by people who are clearly insecure but good performers anyway, it seems to prove an axiom about charisma that I can't quite put my finger on.
