2007-09-03 - 9:51 a.m. The shore was great, perfect weather, good swimmin', good family time. But my favorite part of the trip was the actual travel part. I love trains, and I rarely take them (besides subways). Train travel is relaxing, and there is something about it that inspires reflection. On a plane, travelers are shielded from the reality of distance, space, time, and are treated like guests. On a train, nobody's special, and the fact of geography never lets up. You get tantalizing glimpses of all the places you've chosen not to go: Perth Amboy. Matawan. Elberon! I bought the Trentonian in Asbury Park, for the crossword puzzle, but was rewarded with the big cover story: HEAD IN A BAG "...two firefighters enjoying a day of fishing landed a disturbing prize--a human head in a floating bag..." Today's follow-up story refers to it as a "floating noggin."
