Nor did I! There were certainly a few surprises on there. Conversely, I recently found out that one of my bosses is Irish, when all along I'd thought he was Scottish. It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world.

Aye 'tis that. The imagined to be-Scots-man-who-turned out to actually-be-Irish thing happened to me recently actually. There are some parts of Northern Ireland where their accent is extremely similar to that of the Scots. I'm not altogether clear on the history - I think it has to do with James I encouraging Scottish people to move to Ireland in the 17th century.

And so that accent became a mish-mosh of Irish/Scottish? That's pretty cool. I also think it's interesting that a lot of Southern (US) expressions are old Britishisms: "I reckon" is one that comes to mind, although there are a bunch.
