The day the story came out, I sent the URL to a certain midlist novelist of my acquaintance, thinking she'd find it interesting. She wrote me back today to tell me that several people had written her -- including HER OWN AGENT!! -- asking if SHE were Jane Austen Doe. "You of all people should know I've never made that much money," she responded to the agent.

If the quality of her writing in this article is anything like that of her novels, no wonder no one's reading them. Yeesh, blotchy paragraphs stabbed by dull and obvious quotations and the fatal deadliness (and pointlessness) of "op cit." (which no one uses anymore thank god). Plus, for someone actually making $40k/yr. in the arts, I'm fresh out of rat's asses, sorry.

Sue: Ha! And yes: exactly. Most "midlists" probably haven't made that much moolah. 2Fs: You've summed up what enraged the rest of the readers, too, as well as other acquaintances who've read this piece. I've never seen a more universally dismissed article. Even David Knopfler wrote in, although he was kinda agreeing with her.

There's a big pile-on here.

Whoops--this is a better link. There are related threads at the top level of the site, also.
