The French conection! for the first time? That's definately on my short list of Movies, or movie-movies if you prefer, along with Chinatown, The Shining... genre movies that understand their idiom, and take it to the highest level.

Hey, and two of your biggies feature Jack N. Coincidence?

Paula - 2004-03-28 19:58:42
That should read: "Jack N..... Coincidence?"

Ahh, I don't know, ya think maybe I like (I don't know how to make italics in this format) Jack, maybe I want to be (again italics) Jack, or maybe sometimes Jack is just Jack, and he's good in movie-movies. I'm really bad at pulling lists out of my head, but I almost named another movie w/Jack.

I have never understood the appeal of Jack. He's kinda gross. I loved About Schmidt but I think they should have cast Peter Falk. Why? Because every movie should have Peter Falk.

that's funny, in my experience, people of the "I don't get Jack" persuasion are always Falkophiles. I like 'em both well enough.

Jack seems self-serving, a pain in the butt, whereas Falk seems self-possessed, serene.

Nicholson used to be a great actor, much more pulled in than he is now, always on the edge of contempt and withdrawal, but not too happy about it. Among many great early performances, I think THE LAST DETAIL is probably the most awesome.

These days he tends to sell himself like a product. Sadly, it's not too uncommon for actors to harden like that. I guess it's a difficult art to sustain for too many years, especially in the market place.

A lot of people just don't like Nicholson, in anything. Unlike a lot of wise-ass types, he's not warm and welcoming underneath - there's just pain down there. I agree with Paula (whose birthday is today!) that ABOUT SCHMIDT might have worked better with a more recessive actor. But then a film like that would probably never have gotten made.

Dan, how do you feel about Peter Falk?

Five Easy Pieces, now there's some acting by Jack, rather than some "Jack 'acting.'" If that makes any sense.

I think Peter Falk is pretty cool.

Ah, I was pretty decent in my 60s B-movies, and saved EASY RIDER. (For those who found Peter and Dennis's Hollywuss hippies the wrong flavor of cheese.) And CHINATOWN is still a classic Noir, could be the last fatal flowering of that, yknow? Sure a lotta my movies were kinda dubious, but only if you got picky about stuff other than *my* performances. Up through my tired-ol'-guy turns into Eddie-Munster-on-viagara-and'wolfsbane and runs away with Michy Pf. After that, well, I didn't catch the ones since. But, hey, whattaya want, *endless* good product? Mm'mm, come to think of it, I guess that's why you're at the II-HOP. Okay, ah, later, babes.
