I know! The dog is steering for pete's sake. Maybe we underestimate the capacity for canine learning the same way we often do with our own capacities. (You know, the argument that we only tend to use 10% of our brains).

Re the Salon thing: But she did get paid. She just doesn't think she gets paid enough. But rather than mount an argument about the way writers are paid, and demonstrating any understanding of the market, she just, uh, complains. And that gives the impression that, somehow, she just expects even more money, as a matter of right or something. I mean, ideally, no one would have to complain about money (i.e., no one would be literally starving, or homeless), but failing to recognize one's relatively good fortune is a sort of ethical faux pas, no?

I suppose the reason people feel artists shouldn't complain about money is they feel practicing artists are fulfilled by doing what they want in a way most people are not in their careers. Whether that's true re artists or not, it's a truly sad comment on most people's careers, and what we expect to put up with. Caption it "Tail Wags Dog, All the Goddamn Time."

Yes. But that's where I'm coming from with my change-of-heart about J.A. Doe. Someday, after we've worked out how to stop wars, we need to work out how to change our attitudes about work/careers. We live in a society that looks at "service" as humilation, when service is what turns a job into a calling.

Yes, I should explain this further, but it's a really nice day and I'm going to go outside now!

I think that "10% of our brains" thing is a fallacy. I think we only use 10% because that is all of the brain that is biologically constructed to do the thinkin'. The rest is mush and is needed for other things. I believe I read that in a college psych textbook, I should check, but it's nice out.

According to last month's Scientific American, glial cells--long thought to be merely structural--have now been shown to have a critical role in thinking.

The 10% thing always sounded like wishful thinking to me.

I stand with FFF above. Last time I checked there was no law that said that compensation varied in direct proportion to creativity, labor, or value of product. Does she deserve more than a teacher?

I'll add that throughout our history as a species the vast majority of us have not known where our next meal is coming from. We in the developed world are lucky that there is such a wide range of work that can lead to some level of security of resources. It's been a while since I read the article, but I got the sense she didn't have much perspective.

No! Teachers should get paid more, too, and teaching should be viewed as the important career that it is.

I'm not saying J.A. Doe deserves special treatment, I'm saying we should all be able to make a decent living

I'm coming from the everyone-is-good, everyone-deserves-to-make-a-living POV. I'm all about the love, baby.
