Oh, I love Bergen Bagels. It's such a generic looking store, but they're surprisingly wonderful! (And the Salvation Army around the corner, while small, is my favorite one in Brooklyn.)

Testify. There's somethiing about their muffins (and perhaps also their bagels and cream cheese) that's just better than everyone else's.

I also love the audacious way they have not only black & white cookies, but all-black and all-white. Who else does that?

Mmmm... black and white cookies. I always buy one whenever I'm in NY, which, sadly, I haven't been for about 3 1/2 years now. :(

A-ha, I had a feeling that b&w cookies were an East Coast thing...not that there are very many "things" left anywhere, we've become so homogenized as a cultcha. I've heard that cubano sandwiches are still pretty much a NY thing, though. Can anyone verify?

Au contraire - they're all over the place: at least, I figure if they're all over Milwaukee (which doesn't have a huge Cuban population) they're all over everywhere. Cuban food seems to be a bit of a trend now. Plus, there are at least one or two places in town where I've seen the B&W cookies. We so cosmopolitan!

So, what's left? What's truly New York-ish? What's Milwaukee-ish. This deserves its own entry and comments section, hang on....
