firewroks are the soul of suprise, they contain nothing so intriguing as their unlikelyness.

Yes, which is why they shouldn't be dispayed more than once a year, and they really needn't go on for too long. And why it's almost always a let-down to go to great measures to see them.

As my grandmother the flapper would say* about boys: "Let them come to you."

*This is entirely fictional but I wish it were true.

Well I, for one will continue to believe that you had a flapper grandmother who said that.

She was a flapper for real--all a-flap in her knee-length dresses and long strands of beads and a genuine raccoon coat.

But she never offered advice about boys, except when i was 7 she advised me to read the dictionary so I could be smarter than B*rt C*dd, the smartest boy in school. That, too, was an incongruous bit of whimsy on her part, because she demonstrated no other signs of competitive or feminist spirit.

Bilbert Crendoladd! Yes.

I was determined to get on the trolley (okay: Bergen-Hudson Light Rail) and motivate to Liberty State Park to see the Macy's display. But I opted to be with friends in Tuckahoe, barbecuing, listening to rockabilly and watching Sam - my host's 12 year-old son - light off smoke bombs and chuck them into the empty lot below. Once it got dark, we had an excellent view of fireworks above the Hudson about 3 miles away. As much as I'd love to see the Macy's display some year, I'm put off by all those pictures of THOUSANDS of people flocking to the viewing sites. My predilection - when I'm on my own time and not working for the MAN - is to walk AWAY from the crowds. Get me?
