Or, "Gephardt & Kerry!" as was emblazoned on the front page of N.Y.'s oldest newspaper. Got my mitts on a copy! It's going up at my desk, next to the cheesy leaflets we dropped on Iraq before the war & the picture of Larry Bowa.

Now that you're a BADLANDS fan, you should try Malick's second film, DAYS OF HEAVEN. It's quite different in some ways - it's visually looser, and the story is very conventional compared to BADLANDS' - and it disappoints some lovers of the first film. But it's amazing in its own way, and it has some of the same play with the conventions of voiceover, and a similar use of music.

Days Of Heaven is worth seeing for its visual qualities alone. The locust/fire sequence, in particular, is unbelievable, especially for a low-budget movie of that period. I wouldn't call the story conventional, either, even with the Biblical precedent. And there's some Leo Kottke on the soundtrack.

I don't like it quite as much as Badlands, but that's praising with faint damns.

I kinda liked Thin Red Line, but I am queuing Days from N-flix as we speak, thanks for the recommendation Tim & Dan.

Adam:
I was out jogging early this morning and was going to get a cup of coffee, but realized I only had about 40 cents in my pocket.
"I could go get a POST," I thought, totally out of the blue cuz I never buy newspapers (I read 'em online), and then thought, "Hey, this is a HUNCH, I'd better follow it," and then thought, "Yeah, you and your hunches..."
Doh!

If you want, I'll send you the front page -- or the whole paper -- after the election.

Meanwhile, Kerry is set to announce tomorrow that he will bring back the days when 40 cents buys you a goldarned cup of coffee!

Paula - 2004-07-06 15:28:53
That's a sweet offer, but I predict that my neighborhood bodega will have plenty left over.

Yeah, 40 cents doesn't buy much, does it?

I saw the POST front page on the way to work, and then was shocked to hear it was actually Edwards. I immediately logged on to NYPost.com where, quite embarrassingly, they still had the Gephardt cover story and photo up, but right next to it, under "Breaking News" the lead story was "Kerry picks Edwards"! I printed it out and five minutes later, it had been corrected. I think Gephardt might have been the more solid choice, but no doubt Edwards will inject more pizzazz. Union-friendly Geppy might have brought you a rustbelt swing state or two, but my confidential source high up in the Kerry campaign sez Edwards beat the living hell out of Geppy in every swing-voter poll they conducted.

If you liked 'Badlands' and 'Days of Heaven', then I would also reccommend 'George Washington' <> by David Gordon Green. It's available as a very nice edition from Criterion.

There now are many copies of our generation's 'Dewey Defeats Truman' available on eBay. One is going for $42.50. Keep an eye out for big-screen showings of Days of Heaven, since it's visually quite stunning (although the print I saw wasn't in such shape)

uh, that's supposed to read "good shape"... also, thanks for the Napoleon Dynamite tip a few blogs back. We saw it this weekend and while I went in a little worried that it would be a geeksploitation flick, it turned out to be the best comedy I'd seen in a while. And I got a free poster. Sweet!

Malick's influence on David Gordon Green is very conspicuous, and I like Green's films (he's a nice guy, too), but to my mind he isn't in Malick's league yet. Green has a new film coming out very soon.

Another film of recently years that was heavily influenced by Malick is Lisa Krueger's MANNY & LO.

He directed a handful of amusing commercials for Rheingold beer. A former co-worker of mine, and friend of DGG, is in the "no smoking" one.

Give the POST points for humor: today they have re-run yesterday's headline "Kerry's Choice" with the same layout and line "Dem Picks Edwards as VP Candidate (Really!)". Incidentally, when I was working on that lawsuit in rural Pennsylvania last year, rummaging through 100 years of our client company's records, I found a local newspaper printed the day of the Dewey-Truman election. It predicted an easy win for Dewey, of course. I really wanted to make off with that newspaper, but was afraid of getting fired. Ha ha. I saw DAYS OF HEAVEN, nice print on a big screen, and it's visually dazzling but I couldn't connect with it on a deeper level. Same with THIN RED LINE. Hmph.
