Two recommendations: A great novel that also explores the idea of chosen families - Celebration by Mary Lee Settle. I reread this once every few years. And another movie that will make you cry, but for different reasons: Truly, Madly, Deeply. I saw this on TV last night for about the umpteenth time.

I oh so agree w/ your feelings re: the sacred act of watching films. I would like to open a cinema in an abandoned church where people would be required to behave the same way they do in mass -- or leave, thank you very much. Glad to see 'Battlefield Earth' is on your Netflix que. It's truly craptacular!
