At this point I'm not buying another GbV album unless it's up there with Jesus.

I know whatcha mean, MB. It raises questions: is there a law of diminishing returns when it comes to releasing even really good albums? Do we need our great music to come from different sources? Should Pollard wear a disguise next time? Do you have any gum? Breath mints?

"...is there a law of diminishing returns when it comes to releasing even really good albums? Do we need our great music to come from different sources?" From my standpoint, really good rock albums are so scarce nowadays I'll get 'em any way I can. If John Ashcroft was the only one putting out decent records I'd buy 'em all from him. That said, I started seriously losing interest in GbV after ALIEN LANES, just to be pleasantly shocked by how great ISOLATION DRILLS was. So I'm way interested in hearing the new one! What's it like?

Hello. My name is Jeff, and I'm a music addict. The problem I have is that it often takes me a *long* time to get into things (or for them to get into me), and so I'm reluctant to judge things too soon. (Rereading some of my old reviews painfully reminds me what happens when I have to do that...) The upshot of all that is that I just keep on buyin' Pollard's stuff, knowing that at least, I won't hate it - and that eventually, I might suddenly really like it. I've been getting back into a lot of artists with very deep catalogs recently - like, uh, the Fall, who release a new album every other day, and Pere Ubu, and Julian Cope - and I'm remembering how much I liked a lot of this stuff, as well as finally connecting with some of the newer stuff. I'm pathetic - it'll sometimes take me literally years to get to know a record. Where are them damned donuts and coffee?

John, you're joking about Ashcroft, right?

Right?

Ashcroft does have a lovely singing voice.

I didn't consciously decide to do it, but I followed Sprout and not Pollard after the two went their separate ways. I guess GBV without Sprout wasn't an exciting concept to me. I keep meaning to go back and check what I've been missing.

Like Jeff, it often takes me a long time to get into music. Also like him, I'm much more oriented toward music than lyrics. Maybe the long acclimation period is the price we pay for focusing on an area that we're not truly literate in. I know it doesn't take me anywhere near that long to decide whether I like a lyric.

I'm listening to a few albums that are at least holding my interest: Kaleidoscope's Dive Into Yesterday compilation, Juliana Hatfield's In Exile Deo, A. C. Newman's The Slow Wonder.
