Re filesharing: I think it is a complicated issue, since the best advertisement for music is music, so there's an inherent value for a musician in that music being heard, above and beyond whether every person who hears it contributes directly toward that musician's income. However...clearly, if filesharing became too dominant, that would imperil musicians' livelihoods. If there were such a thing. Fact is, though, at least at this point shared files are of lower quality, and you don't get the value added from packaging, etc. (which, of course, should create an incentive to make that stuff worthwhile. I certainly don't buy into the notion that musicians can "make up" the income lost from filesharing by touring (not all musicians can or will tour) or ancillary sales (if someone wanted to go into the t-shirt business, why bother learning to play guitar?). It does get a little weird though...first read this rather effusive praise of "free music"...and then read this account of a lawsuit launched by that very same free-music effuser. Hmm...irony anyone?
