My brother's job in Iraq was official historian, what he did, mostly, was collect oral histories from his fellow Marines, he was there in the early part of the war, when there was probably still some possibility of optimism, but I'd say he was somewhat radicalized by the experience, one thing I think he got a sense of was the carelessness of the fundemental support and protection the troops on the ground were receiving, even when it would have been a simple thing to do much better.
