Ya know Dr. Quinn is still hawking her little twins?I saw them in a print ad recently. The boys are like 12 now and it's not so cool anymore.

When I worked at Barnes and Noble, a lot of people bought those Anne Geddes baby books for their mothers and grandmothers on Mother's Day. The same people bought the William Wegman Weimaraner books (http://www.wegmanworld.com/) for their fathers on Father's Day. I grew to associate the two: cute, mute creatures posed in strange, sometimes unnatural positions.

EEK, MOMMY! THAT SUNFLOWER HAS THE HEAD OF A BABY!

It's funny you should pair those two, BP.

I actually love Wegman's stuff--I think he has a sense of humor (balanced with a weird sort of obsessive quality) about what he does, and he comes from an arty background. (I've seen some old video work of his, very No Wave stuff from late 70s.)

Plus, Wegman uses the same "models" and keeps extending the family, so there's a sense of love and continuity in his work.

Contrast that with Geddes, who seems to use these poor blobs of undifferentiated baby-flesh as props. I don't get any sense of art or love or whimsy, just "yech, it's a baby hanging from the ceiling with leaves pasted on his head."

I think I turned against Wegman a little with this image: http://www.petcare.cl/william+wegman+puppiesch.jpg. The puppy looks like he might be uncomfortable. And sometimes the dogs' expressions seem a little humiliated, like when they're wearing wigs, and clothing. But then again, Dave and I are planning a Christmas photo this year that will involve dressing up our dog, Homer, in an embarrasing costume. It will have a religious theme. And last night I asked Homer to "pick a card, any card," and he very carefully drew the jack of diamonds with his teeth (He loves to eat paper). We were greatly amused. So I'm not immune to the joys of anthropomorphizing animals.

BP: I am so envious of your holiday card, because for three years I've wanted to dress up my dogs in this and this for Xmas/Chanukah cards, and their father wouldn't go for it.

I suspect that the same people who think Anne Geddes' photos are "soooo adorable" also believe that Thomas Kinkade's work is fine art. And now we know that there's a crossover audience between Geddes and Celine Dion. It's just some of the worst middlebrow junk aimed at the lowest common denominator.

Sue & I recently saw a Yom Kippur display with a six-pointed-star-themed plush chew toy. The company's name? Chewish. Sue got a couple pictures of a Boston in a bat costume. Perfect transformation...

Yeah, more on the dressing-up-dogs theme: I know I should be categorically against it. But, really, if it doesn't harm the dog, and it's done with no intention to mock the poor critter, I'm not sure it's the worst thing you can do. It's a little twisted to make a lifestyle of it, but one day a year....?

Paula, those costumes are cute. The costume we have planned for Homer is a rather less elaborate, though the whole thing is a bit high-concept. By the way, we will also be in the shot, and we'll also be in costume. Re: the dog toy: that's a little beyond the pale, isn't it? A dog chewing on the symbol of faith of 13 million people? Are there any crucifix dog chew toys? "Can't Stop Chewing the Buddha."

Joe said: "Sue & I recently saw a Yom Kippur display with a six-pointed-star-themed plush chew toy. The company's name? Chewish." Our cats, particularly Lumen, are obsessive about sinking their teeth into nearly anything - unfortunately including thin computer connections (as for mouses) and - yikes! - certain electrical cords if they're hanging just so and aren't protected (all now are so protected, of course). We realized this wasn't just a preference, but a religious belief because, uh, our cats are Chewish...
