On "Sideways": Maybe it's because I just came from California when I saw it but I got into the time/place of the film and went along for the ride. It was no laugh-out-loud exercise but I did feel the sting of recognition more than once. I know and have been that Paul Giamati character... Without giving away the ending, I found it extremely satisfying but not cloying, with good mouth-feel and a strong finish.

Ha! I did like the penultimate scene in the fast food joint. Poignant.

I like Smile plenty...but the lyrics don't bother me too much, since I am a genetic mutant who's evolved the capacity to pretty much ignore them. Except in the case of "Good Vibrations," because as with all folks who were children in the sixties, the song has become permanently embedded in the folds of my brain: not that the original lyrics are necessarily up there with Donne or anything, but the new ones were rather distracting. And bad. Still, the album as a whole made me notice musical connections among some of the individual tracks that I'd never noticed before. Very worth hearing.
